19th Century American painter John Donaghy ( 1838-1931) painted this original oil on canvas during a brief stop at the railroad station on his way home, near the end of the American Civil war. This young Union Army recruit was playing the mouth harp to entertain the wounded as they waited for transport. It is one of the few Civil war paintings created by Donaghy, that has survived to this day. The gilded frame that adorns it hails from a later period - probably 1920-1930's New York. It was purchased in 1965-67 from a New York auction house and has been in a private collection ever since. Condition, for its age, is excellent.
