Alexandrite was discovered in the 1830's near the Tokovaya River in the Ural Mountains of Siberian Russia. It later became the national gemstone of Russia. The name "alexandrite" became official in 1842.Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl. It contains both beryllium and chromium. It is the chromium that accounts for the spectacular color change. The color change is the primary qualification for a chrysoberyl to be considered alexandrite. Alexandrite is strongly trichroic. Its color change results in a near-equal transmission of the blue-green and red portions of the spectrum, coupled with strong absorption in the yellow. Today Alexandrite is found in Brazil, India, Madagascar, Myanmar, Russia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
